A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an electronic credential used to identify the signer and to apply a legally recognised digital signature to electronic documents and online filings, subject to the requirements of the relevant portal and applicable law.
A DSC associates a digital signature with the certificate holder. It helps an online system verify who is signing a document or filing.
A digital signature helps detect whether signed electronic content has been altered after signing. This provides an important layer of trust for electronic transactions.
Instead of printing, physically signing, scanning and uploading documents, eligible documents can be digitally signed through supported applications and portals.
Digital signatures provide a mechanism for authenticating the identity associated with an electronic signature. This is especially useful where portals require the authorised person to sign electronically.
The cryptographic signing process is designed to make subsequent alteration of the signed data detectable. A valid signature therefore adds confidence that the signed content has not been changed after signing.
DSC enables electronic execution of eligible forms, declarations and filings, reducing the need for printing, scanning and physical movement of documents.
Where the DSC is issued with a USB cryptographic token, the private key is protected within the token. The token should be kept securely and its PIN should never be shared with another person.
A DSC can be required or useful across several government, regulatory, corporate and business platforms, depending on the particular filing, entity and authorised signatory.
| Platform / Area | Typical Uses |
|---|---|
| Income Tax | Digital signing of applicable income-tax returns, forms, submissions and e-proceeding responses where DSC-based authentication is permitted or required. |
| GST | Registration and amendments, returns and other GST-related applications or submissions where digital signature is applicable for the taxpayer/entity. |
| MCA / ROC | Company and LLP filings, forms, annual filings and other MCA submissions that require the authorised signatory or professional to digitally sign. |
| e-Tendering & Procurement | Participation in eligible government and institutional e-tendering, procurement and submission processes that specify DSC authentication. |
| EPFO / Other Portals | Selected employer, regulatory and government portal workflows where DSC-based authentication or electronic signing is enabled. |
| Corporate & Business Documents | Electronic execution or signing of eligible documents and submissions where a digital signature is accepted by the relevant system or counterparty. |
For token-based DSCs, the private key is stored in a cryptographic USB token rather than being exposed as an ordinary file. The token and PIN should remain under the control of the certificate holder.
The signing mechanism uses cryptographic technology to create a signature associated with the signed data and the certificate holder.
Supported software and portals can validate a digital signature and identify whether the certificate is valid and whether the signed data has been changed.
Important: A DSC is primarily an authentication and electronic-signing credential. It should not be treated as a substitute for general cybersecurity controls, encryption, backups or secure document-management practices. Never share the DSC token, PIN or private-key credentials with unauthorised persons.
